PRE-SURGICAL INFORMATION

No one likes the thought of their pet undergoing surgery, but we know there are certain problems that require surgical intervention for recovery.

You should not be unnecessarily conerned. There have been many recent advances in veterinary surgery. Anesthesia, surgical monitoring, and surgical techniques are very advanced to insure your pet's safety. In fact, it parallels that routinely used in human surgery.

Pre-surgical testing is often recommended to insure your pet's safety by diagnosing any problems not readily apparent. Blood screening for disease is a routine procedure in human medicine. Chemical analysis of a small blood sample probably gives us the complete evaluation of the overall body condition.

In the early stages of disease, many subtle changes occur in the blood composition that can give hints of future problems before they become serious. Blood Profile Examinations are CHEAP INSURANCE to increase the safety, health, and welfare of your pet when surgery is to be performed. Human surgeons would not even think of inducing anesthesia without blood profile analysis. That is a major reason deaths are so uncommon from elective surgical procedures.

The same is now true for veterinarians. We want to do everything possible to minimize possible complications that can arise during surgery from problems that, although not apparent on physical examination, will show up when the blood is examined and screened for problems. Kidney disease, liver disease, anemia, low resistance to disease, and clotting disorders are examples that can be detected greatly increasing the safety of your pet.

The particular profile we recommend varies with the age of the pet. To keep your cost to the minimum, we have designed profiles for various ages of pets. Cost, obviously, will vary with the age of the pet and the extent of blood tests we feel are necessary.

Tests may include:

  1. Blood Counts & Total Protein
  2. Clotting Times
  3. Kidney Function
  4. Liver Function
  5. Electrolytes & Blood Sugar
  6. Urinalysis
  7. Heartworm Examination
  8. Feline Leukemia Testing
  9. Internal Parasite Examinations

ANY ABNORMALITIES DIAGNOSED MAY NEED TO BE CORRECTED BEFORE SURGERY IS BEGUN.
